The Secret

SNL - The Secret

Little did I know that while having a spirited discussion with my friend Heather and her roommate Mario about “The Secret” and the Law of Attraction it espouses, that on the east coast, at that precise moment, my computer was likely recording this humorous take on Oprah’s endorsement of the book… Many of the objections I have are similar the ones raised in this article in Salon.com, but my thinking is even simpler: I do not believe that thoughts alone shape our reality, unless they also drive us to action.
In essence while I have no doubt that people who are enthusiastically embracing “The Secret” may even find it leads to success in their lives, I do not believe it to be the result of “passively” focusing their thoughts on achieving the desired outcome, but that they are unaware of the fact they are subconsciously acting to influence events.

An amusing revisionist history…

Who knew that George Washington would kill little British school children? And the bit about holding the lady’s hand in acid at a party was twisted!

Iranians offended by “300″….

…according to this article in Reuters.

Leonidas from 300

Honestly, it’s a really decent movie with fantastic “virtual” cinematography, and it’s not intended to be interpreted as historical… just the result of Miller taking extensive artistic license with the story of the Battle of Thermopylae to craft his own tale. I’d give it a solid B for a grade… And if you’d like to learn more about history and the story of “300″, click here.

In other news, the British are pretty bitter about how we’ve portrayed them in “The Patriot” and every other movie about the Revolutionary War where we’ve made them look like snooty aristocrats with dainty constitutions and bad teeth.

Likewise, Germans are sick of being the villain of choice in all movies set during World War I or World War II. Basically, we have a fifty year period in film where everyone with a German accent is presumed to be pure evil, just like Mr. Vee-are-not-thirsty from “Raiders of the Lost Ark“, which of course, was really an attempt to rally Americans to invade Germany during the 80′s.

Or at least half of it… you know, the East German part.

In any event, I just hope that everyone who goes to a movie that is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller, is consciously aware that he and Zack Snyder are obviously in cahoots with the Bush administration to smear the good name of Xerxes I in order to rile all of us up to invade Iran, even though we just had an election where most of our populace vehemently voted to put an end to the war in Iraq.

Plus, if we really wanted to invade Iran, I think we should have done it say…. 30 years ago when they were holding Americans hostage and lacked nuclear capability. Of course, the Russians did, and they had nukes.

Apollo Creed: Nubian God!

I blame the Russians for killing Apollo Creed. He’s a nubian God! And don’t ask me, “What’s a nubian?”

Incidentally, I neglected to mention that Russians are still reeling from being blamed for Ivan Drago killing Apollo Creed, and have long suspected that we were planning to use Rocky III (which was a thinly veiled reference at World War III), as an excuse to start dropping nukes on them!

More Than One Solution

I was checking out the blog of the magician, David Blaine, and found this interesting puzzle:

The answer (from another website) is fairly clever, but I have a simpler (or, more readily apparently to my primitive brain) solution:

EIGHT

H is the eighth letter of the alphabet that starts this string of eight characters that forms the puzzle. Oh sure, if my mind were wired for chemistry, I may have thought of… the other answer.
