Beating a dead (last) horse

Sometimes, it’s fun to watch sports writers beat up someone who guarantees a victory, and I have to say that this quote in an article about Big Brown on ESPN.com gave me a giggle:

This was the worst performance by a Brown since W. told Mike he was doing a heck of a job handling Katrina.

Oh no he din’t!

Unforgiven…

…would be a great alternate title for the Sex and the City movie.

Oh, wait… There’s something I have to do first!

“My name is Flip Medley, and I am a straight guy who actually enjoys watching ‘Sex and the City‘ despite the stereotypes that we men don’t get it.”

Okay, so without giving up any spoilers, let me just say that the movie was pretty good, and if you’re a fan of the series, there are enough references to past plotlines to keep the laughs going. What makes the movie engaging is that the relationships that were rock steady at the end of the series are suddenly exposed as flawed, and the problems aren’t the usual “kiss and make up in sixty minutes” flavor that were commonplace in the series, though they are sorted out in a mad rush towards the end of the movie. In fact, by the end of the movie, I noticed that the folks I went with (yes, all women :-) ) were conflicted over whether or not forgiveness was even an option given some of the heartbreak involved.

A movie summary using only smileys: :-) :-D :-( :-?

Overall, it’s a fun movie, and while I’m not sure that people who are new to the characters and unfamiliar with the series will get all the references or even grok the depth of the conflicts that drive the plot, I think that the super-sized plot devices and the wrestling with the nature of love and forgiveness will make the story’s appeal universal.

I give it two thumbs up, but it’s still no “300:-D
