Okay, so a while ago, Shaq was looking for a new nickname now that he is playing with LeBron James in Cleveland.

Let’s go back in time and revisit some of his past nicknames:

The Diesel (we’ll revisit this one in a moment)

Shaq Fu

The Big Aristotle

The Big Daddy

Superman (well, I think Dwight Howard just appropriated that name…)

Wilt Chamberneezy

The Real Deal

The Big Agave (???)

The Big Cactus

Shaqtus

The Big Galactus (kind of redundant… Galactus eats frickin’ planets, so a Big Galactus is what? Bigger?)

Anyways, let’s consider where he’s playing: Cleveland. And since the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Washington Wizards are rivals — and keep in mind the Wiz beat the Cavs twice last year (including the “crab dribble” game), and should have won a third on Christmas Day — I can’t let Shaq have an easy time of it. And when a friend who is also a fellow season-ticket holder for the Wiz proposed this name, I thought, “It’s perfect! Kind of like “The Diesel” but… grosser!”

 The nickname?

The Cleveland Steamer

*** EDIT ***

I don’t know if all of you remember how Steve McNair wound up with the Baltimore Ravens towards the end of his career, but let’s rewind to 2006…

From ESPN.com:

By Chris Mortensen
ESPN.com
Archive

Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair was asked to leave the team’s training facility when he reported Monday for offseason workouts, his agent and team sources confirmed.
McNair was told by a team trainer that he would not be allowed to work out until his contract situation is resolved, according to James “Bus” Cook, who represents McNair.

“Steve was told that until he got his contract straightened out, he wasn’t welcome at the facility,” said Cook. “Heck, he’s got his contract already straightened out and now he’s trying to fulfill it by reporting for the offseason.”

Cook said there had been no warning of the team’s position. Titans sources said it was a decision was made by owner Bud Adams, who apparently fears that an offseason injury would make him liable for McNair’s current contract.

“We have no choice but to protect the club and its future from the possibility of having a significant amount of our salary cap at risk in a single player should he sustain a major injury,” the team said in a statement Tuesday. “This is entirely a risk management problem.”

Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who was in Los Angeles observing USC quarterback Matt Leinart in a private workout Monday, declined to elaborate but said, “Things got blown out of proportion. … We’ll get it straightened out.”

McNair is scheduled to make $10 million in 2006, including a $1 million team penalty because the Titans declined to exercise a three-year option. His salary cap charge is almost $24 million, and the team is trying to get McNair to restructure his deal. It has been speculated that the team could release the quarterback if there is not a new contract in place in the near future.

“The reason his cap number is $24 million is because they kept asking him to restructure every year to create space,” Cook said. “This guy has done everything for the team, and he has two or three really good years left. Now, they treat him like this.”

Today, Steve McNair was found dead in Nashville, TN from gunshot wounds. Here’s the statement made by Bud Adams (the NFL owner who locked out Steve from the Titans facilities in the article above) about how wonderful Steve was:

From ESPN.com (again):

“We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair’s passing today,” Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement. “He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl.”

The NFL is just a business but let’s not let press releases gloss over how, as much as he admired his player, Adams threw him under the bus when it was time to make the deal. And that’s why the Ravens wound up with an All-Pro QB before the Flacco era began, and why McNair retired a Raven and not a Titan.

Two things about this video are interesting — one is that Angel Matos (Cuba) decides that his disqualification is unjust (he had a minute to recover from an injury and the ref ended the gold medal match immediately as the minute ran out, even though he was clearly ready to go) and kicks the referee in the head! Not a very defensible approach to conflict resolution, eh?

The second thing that is interesting is that YouTube can’t host videos of this from NBC, but they can host the videos published by overseas media outlets. So, ironically, even though NBC is attempting to embargo all of their “exclusive” footage of the Olympics so that the only way you can see any of the events (after they have already ended) is to watch it on an NBC/Universal channel. How much do you want to bet that by 2012, it’ll be nigh impossible for any national media outlet to have control of its “product” like this? After all, if I can obtain the footage legally from a source outside of the USA, then there is really no advantage to having exclusive rights to the Olympics for NBC… unless, of course, they begin to sue YouTube and other video hosting sites to prevent them from making videos from other parts of the world available here in the land of the free and the home of the Internet.

One of the things people (okay, just Yan) tease me about is my “addiction” to chicken nuggets. I’ve even posted my recipe for making a “one minute meal” with them to my blog, and I’ve even made converts out of those brave enough to get past the spicy scent of Slap Ya Mama and Tabasco.

So imagine my joy when I saw this article in the news:

That’s right, Usain Bolt eats chicken nuggets and he’s the fastest man in the world. Not the fattest man in the world. Ahem!

Dodgeball with Jason Campbell and Colt Brennan

He’s a stickler for doing things the right way every time, as most longtime quarterback coaches are. On Thursday, Zorn set up a drill that looked totally bizarre. He had three of the four quarterbacks on the roster get in a circle, with Campbell in the middle holding a football, poised as if he was about to pass. The quarterbacks on the perimeter took turns firing Pilates exercise balls at Campbell. “Dodgeball,” it’s called.

Said Zorn: “I want the quarterbacks not to just move their bodies slightly. I want them to move a lot, to get used to a rusher coming at them.” You kind of figured Zorn, a heady sort, would come up with things like this.
