Check this out… this is a scam claiming to come from the FBI, and they’ve decided to e-mail me to tell me that, which the help of an “Intelligence Monitoring Network” they have determined that I have won a lottery outside of the U.S. of A. to the tune of $800,000.

Let’s break it down…

Yes, this scammer has the testicular fortitude to actually use the FBI’s real address on their e-mail letterhead.

Despite this intensive investigation where they uncovered my e-mail address, they are unable to address me by name, only as “BENEFICIARY”. If you doubt how deep their investigation went, read on…

This is the mention of the nebulous “Intelligence Monitoring Network System”. I’d like to monitor the intelligence of anyone stupid enough to respond to this scam.

Blah blah blah… oh wait, the FBI says this is Safe (with a capital ‘S’!) and 100% risk free! Oooh!

The FBI is apparently extremely thorough…. despite being unable to determine my name, they did find the name of a South African lottery agent. Who knows how many precious man hours our loyal public servants used to help me get to my lottery winnings? Hopefully, no terrorists snuck by while they were checking up on my lottery winnings using the “Intelligence Monitoring Network System”!

The guts of the scam — they want me to pay this “agent-in-charge” $370.00 to get at my $800,000 lottery winnings.

Of course, this lottery agent dude has a Hotmail
address. (I smile because usually it’s a Yahoo! address…)

Continuing with the trend of putting their balls right out there, this email claims the FBI is authorizing me to pay the $370. No need to consult with anyone else, ’cause this e-mail from the FBI says it’s okay! And did I mention it is Safe and 100% risk free?

And finally, poor John Miller… he’s cited (correctly) as the FBI’s guy when it comes to public affairs.

I consider this spam to be an impressive display of courage and/or stupidity, and I can’t help but wonder if there is some poor sap who is using dial-up who is scratching his head and popping a v1agra while chatting which HOT CHICKS NEAR YOU all the while thinking that it must be okay, because it really does look official…

I had a meeting get cancelled, so I decided to check out the new “all sports” format on WJFK using internet streaming radio. Of course, before I could listen to Mike Wise talk about DNA testing Dominican players to make sure they are not lying about their age, I was subjected to this advertisment, which I don’t think resonates with the demographic that WJFK is aiming for…

Living in the D.C. metro area, there is a new feature of Google Maps that is very useful. I was surprised to see they had quietly added a feature to peruse traffic scenarios based on historical traffic data, so that if you’re wondering if traffic sucks even worse at 5:30pm than it does at 4:45pm on Tuesdays, you can find the answer really easily.

Here are four quick screenshots to walk you through how it looks…

Click on “Traffic”…

It defaults to “Live” traffic. Click on “Change”…

Now you can set up the date and time for the historical traffic data you’d like to view. Here’s 4:45pm on Tuesdays on the Washington, D.C. Beltway.

And here’s 5:30pm on Tuesdays on the Washington, D.C. Beltway.

Gov. Sarah Palin’s Yahoo! e-mail account was hacked, and contents from her mailbox uploaded to Wikileaks.org. Depending on the method used, this means that either Yahoo! has a major security issue that could cause anyone’s e-mail to be accessed by someone else (!) or Sarah Palin has chosen some really craptacular passwords to protect her Yahoo! e-mail account.

(Which, incidentally, should not be used for any secret squirrel business because you have no control over the storage and dissemination of your e-mails from those services. Just ask Shi Tao — Yahoo! turned over his e-mails to the Chinese government and now he’s doing ten years in a Chinese prison!)

So if any of the “leaks” coming from her e-mail account become part of the scandal involving the possible firing of her ex-brother-in-law (there’s a hyphenated title if I ever saw one!), it’s quite possible that this hack could give legs to the “Troopergate” scandal.

Anyways, here’s the story from Wikileaks.org…

Two things about this video are interesting — one is that Angel Matos (Cuba) decides that his disqualification is unjust (he had a minute to recover from an injury and the ref ended the gold medal match immediately as the minute ran out, even though he was clearly ready to go) and kicks the referee in the head! Not a very defensible approach to conflict resolution, eh?

The second thing that is interesting is that YouTube can’t host videos of this from NBC, but they can host the videos published by overseas media outlets. So, ironically, even though NBC is attempting to embargo all of their “exclusive” footage of the Olympics so that the only way you can see any of the events (after they have already ended) is to watch it on an NBC/Universal channel. How much do you want to bet that by 2012, it’ll be nigh impossible for any national media outlet to have control of its “product” like this? After all, if I can obtain the footage legally from a source outside of the USA, then there is really no advantage to having exclusive rights to the Olympics for NBC… unless, of course, they begin to sue YouTube and other video hosting sites to prevent them from making videos from other parts of the world available here in the land of the free and the home of the Internet.

A lot of my friends are not computer-savvy. A lot of my friends also run Windows in one of its many incarnations, and when they have bizarre problems with their computers, I hear about them.

One friend (who shall remain nameless) had a weird issue where her keyboard would spew random characters every so often. As she was describing the problem, I checked a few websites and found that there actually was a virus circulating that matched her symptoms to a tee.

Her response?

“Oh well, it’s no big deal. It’s kind of cute!”

Then I launched in to a whole explanation about how having a lackadaisical approach to securing her computer could leave her compromised — and she could become a pawn of nebulous Eastern European hacker groups who get paid to turn your computer in to part of a botnet and use it for purposes such as spamming everyone with Viagra ads.

My friend politely listened as if I’d just said, “We have to wear the tin foil hats to keep the aliens from controlling our minds!”, but finally… FINALLY… a “mainstream” source of news has covered this topic.

From The New York Times.
